welcome to

the ethical edit

Ethical fashion and lifestyle discussions for women from a chronic over-consumer and ex-shopaholic tyring to live a more ethical and sustainable life… aka “be the change, empower others to do the same.”

My story

Born out of a desire to “be the change” and empower others to do the same, The Ethical Edit is dedicated to making ethical lifestyle changes possible and accessible by sharing ethical and sustainable brands and information for conscious consumers.

Formerly a blog called The Honest Root, this project started back in 2015 after I (April Jordan) travelled overseas and witnessed the deep injustices faced by so many people. Never one to sit around and wait for things to get better on their own, I launched my original blog to chronicle my forays into ethical and sustainable living as a lay-person with little to no prior understanding of what it meant, and to help my peers find products that would enable them to vote with their dollars for a better world.

I also started this journey because, admittedly, I am a chronic over-consumer and shopaholic if I don’t keep a close eye on my buying habits. Over time I came to realize that my rapid consumption was damaging to our beautiful planet and the people and animals who live here, and I was not OK with contributing to the mess that is caused by thoughtless consumption.

My original goal was to make everything I owned and supported ethical or sustainable or “better” in some way. And, while I now know that 100% sustainability is not actually possible at this time, I continue pushing myself to be better, grow and advocate for a fairer world.

I’ve learned so much over the last several years and continue to learn every day, and, as I’ve learned more and more about what it means to be ethical and sustainable, I have been able to hone in on my areas of focus and passion.

So now with a new name and a fresh coat of paint, The Ethical Edit arrives with a refined focus and look, but the same ethos: be the change, and empower others to do the same.

And what does this rebranding mean for the blog?

I’m so glad you asked! Rest assured it’s the same old truth telling, novelty-seeking, bad-joke-making, justice-loving, freedom-fighting April writing brand reviews.

But wait, there’s more! I am so excited to announce that my sister, Amanda, now also writes for and contributes to The Ethical Edit (see her contributed posts here). So when you see roundups and deep dives going forward there’s a pretty good chance she’s had a hand in bringing them to life. Why my sister? Because I trust her and she is a wildly talented writer. I trust her to write clear, interesting posts, to care about doing right by good brands and I trust her to dig for more information (though I still do most of the research) when we are working on a project together. She is a person who has supported my sustainability journey from day one and who makes a lot of effort in her own life to live consciously. Essentially, she’s the perfect fit.
