I'm a gigantic fan of making the old new again, rescuing and repurposing, and finding creative solutions for diverting waste... which is why I am so excited to partner with JORD, who sent me this beautifully sustainable wood watch in exchange for an honest review. So here we go!

An overview of jord’s wood watches

In terms of look and feel of the watch, I love it. My watch is the Frankie Zebrawood and Champagne with light, warm-toned, striped wood and a champagne and gold watch face. I've tried this watch with a few different outfits and because of the multi-colored wood, it matches a wide range of outfits very easily. But if Zebrawood isn't your thing, there are piles of watch colors, sizes and shapes to choose from.

Price wise, these watches are on the higher end. The Frankie Zebrawood and Champagne retails at $260 CAD - so definitely a more luxury product. Personally, I would only feel justified buying this as an anniversary or employee appreciation gift or some such, but I do think it would make a really beautiful gift, especially since you can customize a storage box for the watch.

I can't really speak to the durability of JORD's sustainable wood watches since I'm very careful with mine, haha! I take care not to even splash it when I wash my hands. However, JORD does have a one year warranty should anything go wrong with your timepiece. If you happen to bust your watch they will repair it for you for a small fee.

JORD’s sustainability practices

So all that is great, right? But what really sets JORD apart from other brands is the efforts they make to ensure their timepieces are people and planet friendly. Before writing this review I looked into JORD's sustainable and ethical practices. Personally, I was quite impressed with the transparency regarding materials used and how willing the rep was to answer all my questions. But if you're like me, you want the nitty-gritty about what the company is doing. So here you go:

  • Diverting waste. According to the rep I spoke with, a great majority of the wood they use comes from furniture remnants. Since each watch is created using very small pieces of wood, JORD is able to use wood that would otherwise end up as waste.

  • Transparency and responsible sourcing. JORD lists each type of new wood that's used for the watches, along with the part of the world it comes from and whether or not it is listed on either the CITES Appendices or IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. JORD considers certain wood, like Bamboo and Maple, as "fully sustainable" since they are not listed as endangered. Some wood, like Golden Camphor, have nuanced descriptions of the wood's status so you can choose whether or not you're comfortable purchasing that wood. Overall I would prefer all their timepieces to be 100% sustainable in every conceivable way (obviously, like I want everything in life to be) but I really appreciate the transparency and the fact that none of the wood used is considered endangered. And yes, I read each description provided for each wood type, and went and investigated the meaning of both the CITES and IUCN list haha! I'm a thorough woman. Of course, the status of some woods can change over time so I recommend checking the status of the type of wood for any watch you want to purchase.

  • Natural ingredients. The watches are conditioned with natural tung oil - so the people making the watches don't need to worry about encountering hazardous chemicals during their work day.

  • Ethically made. According to their rep, the watches are made in China and Switzerland, and in both locations "the workers are making a livable wage, with paid time off, benefits, and vacations/holidays off."

Is the price of a JORD watch worth it?

If you have the money, then I think so. These are some seriously stylish, sustainable wood watches that would make a great addition to a wide variety of wardrobes. If you want to treat yourself or someone else and you're willing to splurge a little, I think these watches combined with a customized, engravable box, would make a really thoughtful gift.

But what you do you think? Would you add a wood watch to your wardrobe? Leave a comment below!
