3 Good News Stories From Around The World To Brighten Your Day
We all need a little boost here and there to remind us that all our hard work fighting for human rights, minimizing waste, protecting the environment and more is actually working. That’s why I’ve rounded up three good news stories from around the world to help brighten your day and maybe even inspire you to keep fighting the good fight. Enjoy!
Winning payment for vulnerable garment workers: The #PayUp campaign, which petitioned fashion retailers to pay up for their orders with garment workers and manufacturers has so far helped to unlock a staggering $22 billion between 21 brands, ensuring makers around the globe will receive compensation for their work. Black female authors topped the charts in Britain: Recently Reni Eddo-Lodge became the first black woman to reach the #1 spot in the Britain’s paperback non-fiction book bestseller chart with her book Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race, and Bernardine Evaristo became the first black woman to reach #1 in Britain’s paperback fiction book bestseller chart with Girl, Woman, Other. It should be noted that, while this is a great accomplishment, the fact that it took so long is horrifying. As Reni said, “The fact that it’s 2020 and I’m the first. Let’s be honest. Reader demand aside, that it took this long is a horrible indictment of the publishing industry.” (Via The Guardian)
Saving food waste in Europe: The app Too Good To Go is helping people in 14 European countries save food waste by offering access to unsold, safe-to-eat produce at about 1/3 the regular price. And in addition to reducing food waste, this helps save money for households on restricted budgets, provdiding roughly 100,000 meals per day. (Via Reader’s Digest Canada)
